Love Saints will never be the same without our Will Indian on Guitar.

Will was a GREAT friend to me. We’re gonna miss his awesome guitar playing skills... and we’re gonna miss his overall great attitude... He always had a great

joke to tell at the gigs. I can’t remember even one. He had an incredible brain.

First time I heard Will play guitar...

The Rhythm Rats & The Nortons.

I knew Will was exactly the guitarist I wanted for the repertoire that he knew best, was the same stuff I was wanting to play with the band.  Zydeco, cajun, blues, old style country and western honky tonk.

If you play accordion... you better have a guitar player that knows how to polka.

Will loved polkas... from Buck Owens to Clifton Chenier... and Viva Seguin polka from the Jimenez family. Will loved it all. He was a tad fussy at times, and I would call him a music traditionalist...not to mention walking encyclopedia of the blues guitar. Will wanted to play the songs like they were done originally... Once, Joel Guzman and I changed Zydeco Cha Cha to a swing groove... we thought we were so clever... we thought it sounded very hip... but when I showed it to Will, he told me: I don’t like it, I prefer the original Clifton heavy straight polka style. That was Will. He never stood on the sidelines without comment about the greatness of the original blues, country and zydeco artists and music we both loved.

Being that Will and I are both music teachers...we always had great and interesting stuff to discuss about what we were teaching... and why... I forever changed the way I write 2 chords in one measure on a chord chart now.  Will said he didn’t like hyphens between chord symbols... that it could be mistaken for minor. He was right. (I put bar lines around all split measures now)

Will played some of my own... very important gigs... with The Love Saints the past 15 yrs. Broken Spoke last Tuesdays... Too many to count, more than a few for a few months were with Pinetop Perkins... pls. check out the youtube videos...

Debra Peters channel. Will is on several of ’em.  Will and I both love and adore Willie Nelsons music... one Broken Spoke Tues. fell on Willie’s b.day one year... we played ONLY Willie all night long.

We played International Accordion Festival Arneson Riverwalk Theatre in SA, We had a blast as an 8 piece downtown at Austin City Hall... Will and I played our very fun mardi gras duo for FAT TUES past 5 years... @ Barton Creek CC. Apparently, Barton Creek CC has sold to Omni so that gig is all over now. There’s just no easy way to accept that Will is gone... He fought the good fight to survive... His final story is always going to be a sad one for us... Life is not fair and this is the proof... R.I.P. Will Indian  1953~2014

  INTERNATIONAL ACCORDION FESTIVAL 2010

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

The way Debra Peters plays classic country, zydeco, and Tex-mex on her accordion - squeezing the bellows as easy as she breathes - it's clear that although Canada might be be where she was born, Austin, Texas is her home. A songwriter, singer, pianist, and accordion teacher, it's fair to call Peters an "Austin Original." Having shared the stage with some of the finest representatives of Texas music - Valerio Longoria, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Pinetop Perkins, and many, many, more - it's no surprise that Peters leads one of the best honky-tonk groups in town, The Love Saints. Weekly residents at the legendary dance hall, The Broken Spoke, Debra Peters & the Love Saints play the perfect mix of country-blues-western swing-roots rock-swamp pop to get your boots scootin' and your heart strings pulled. With accordion skills and sweet country twang, its no wonder Peters has earned a reputation as "The Squeezebox Chanteuse of the Lone Star State.”

*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

"AUSTIN TO AFGHANISTAN" CONCERT LINEUP ANNOUNCED

July 27, 2009 Austin, Texas - The roster of bands performing at the upcoming "Austin to Afghanistan" concert was announced today.
Participating artists include the Middle Eastern music of the 1001 Nights Orchestra, a set of Tom Waits songs from The Boxspring Hogs, the Gulf Coast soul/R&B of Bedrock and the Cajun/Zydeco music of Debra Peters and the Love Saints.  The concert is scheduled for August 8th from 2 pm until 6 pm at Hanover's
in Pflugerville, just north of Austin.

"Austin to Afghanistan" is a benefit concert to provide new musical
instruments for a group of Afghan musicians who were attacked by the
Taliban while performing at a wedding in June. For their alleged "sin" of making music in public, the musicians were beaten, their heads were shaved, they were tied to trees overnight and their instruments were
smashed.  After being freed by villagers the next morning, the musicians fled to the relative safety
of Pakistan, only to be forced back
to Afghanistan by the current fighting in Pakistan. They are currently living as destitute refugees in eastern Afghanistan.

The benefit is the work of Ed Kliman, a self-described "blue collar,
working musician" in Austin, Texas.  He read a news wire report of the
incident at http://in.reuters.com/article/southAsiaNews/idINIndia-40340120090615)
and was "compelled to do something to help my brother musicians.

Yeah, I know, there are people closer to home who need assistance, but NONE of us are working in situations which are that dangerous or are that poor."

Mr. Kliman managed to contact the Afghan reporter who first wrote the story and was eventually able to trace the musicians to Jalalabad.
"Mr. Shalizi, the Reuters reporter, did an amazing job being able to
track a bunch of nameless refugee musicians across a war zone and
    two countries" he said.

"A modest $5.00 admission fee will be charged at the door and donations
will be accepted all during the show," Kliman said.  "We hope to get these
guys some new instruments so they can at least earn a living and maybe
bring a little joy to a corner of the world which could sure use it."

When somebody takes the time to read the ZYDECOWGIRL’s blog I’m very grateful that there actually IS someone out there... in this big old world... who gives a hoot about some crazy accordion lovin’ teachin’ & squeezin’ honky-tonkin’ lady from Texas. Who used to be from California.  Who used to be from Canada.

Who cares? This website is full of pictures and archives of fun times in the life of a girl who’s first and last music instrument is the accordion!  Earliest memories of the accordion music my parents brought back from Mexico in the 1960’s. Those were the days when I told my mom and dad I was going to marry a bullfighter!

Along came 9 years of weekly accordion lessons with RONNIE MORRIS of Jacob Sheen & Morris School of Music.  circa 1966   Mr. Morris taught the Palmer Hughes course. In Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

He conducted soloists, duets, quartets and large accordion ensembles that performed and competed in the KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL every year.  We performed at the Jubilee Auditorium “Night of the Stars”

Regrettably, I had all my certificates

and pictures and all my childhood memorabilia stolen and never recovered. I managed to rescue my small and shiny trophy from KIWANIS for winning an accordion competition when I was 11.

Then along came THE BAND.   Garth Hudson and THE BAND showed me it was very possible to use the accordion in a very hip way.
